Program Note:
The title—Where did all of the words go?—comes from Jenny Offill's novel Last Things. It is a question asked by the protagonist, whose mother makes up imaginative stories and myths, one being that we are all born knowing every word of every language, and that as we age, we forget them, and only learn the language(s) spoken in our immediate community. The young girl wonders where all the words go as we grow up. This question is taken a bit out of context for my purposes; music can describe without words, and I often think about an unspoken joy in playing music, by yourself or with friends, without any intention other than to see where it takes you. True unstructured play, which we often lose in adulthood.
The piece started as an improvisation I recorded while playing saxophone, and in that moment I felt free, not worrying about the notes on the page, just letting breath flow through the instrument and my fingers taking charge. I love composing music for friends, and I am incredibly grateful that Andy Hudson and Anthony Taylor commissioned me to write this for them. - Notes by Anna Meadors
